StoryTrails is created by StoryFutures Academy, which is run by Royal Holloway, University of London and the National Film and Television School (NFTS).

National Archives

It is delivered in partnership with the British Film Institute and the BBC, providing unprecedented creative access to the world’s most important film and television archives.

StoryTrails is part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK

UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK is a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of creativity, taking place across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and online from March to October 2022.

Using a mix of stunning augmented reality experiences that remix the BFI and BBC unparalleled film and television archives, audiences can experience history where it actually happened, revitalising the streets upon which they stand with new voices and untold stories of the past

15 Towns

StoryTrails will take place in 15 locations across the UK. In each town or city we’ll be creating a series of magical mobile AR walking trails, an immersive map of the location’s psycho-geography and a series of VR experiences.

StoryTrails Locations: Omagh, Dundee, Dumfries, Blackpool, Bradford, Sheffield, Lincoln, Wolverhampton, Swansea, Newport, Bristol, Swindon and Slough, ending in London (Lambeth and Lewisham).

Your Stories

We’ll be collecting your stories to create the world’s first spatial archive, linking national media archives with contemporary 3D scans of objects, people and places to create a new way of experiencing your town.

StoryTrails will be coming to town in early 2022, collecting stories and scans, before revisiting each location with a multimedia touring show that will immerse you in history like never before.

In the summer of 2022, you will be able to visit your local library and step into a portal that will magically bring the past to life, opening up a conversation about our future.
